My name is Paolo Corradeghini and in this blog i’d like to share with you my thoughts and some contents about what i do for living.
I’m an engineer and i work as a surveyor.
I do believe in sharing and in theese pages i’ll write about what i’ve learned, and keep learning in the field (and in the office too).
I live and work in Italy.
I’m based in the North West (La Spezia), watching the Ligurian Sea, half way between Genova and Florence and very close to 5 Terre.
I graduated in 2004.
I worked for three years in the technical area of a Natural Reserve.
In 2007 i moved to an engineering company where i learned so many things about natural hazards and gravitational phenomena.
I studied landslides and falling rocks, snow avalanches and debris flows, stream, river and seascape areas.
It was so exciting finding a way to protect structures, roads, manmade stuff and people from risk related to theese events.
I also dealed with geodata, geodatabase and surveying activities.
I was passionate about coordinate reference systems, ellipsoids, cartographic projections, geoids, xyz, and so on…
In 2017 i decided to start a new freealance activity by myself.
My company is called 3DMetrica.
It’s Italy based.
It’s 100% devoted to surveying activities and mostly to 3D reconstruction through photogrammetric techniques (and some laser scanning).
If you’d like to read my italian contents you can check 3DMetrica blog here.
I love photography.
I shot a lot of pictures and I’ve learned, quite deeply, how digital cameras work.
Despite of all i’m still an engineer.
I met modern photogrammetry and structure from motion algorithms.
And i was amazed to see how digital pictures and high accuracy measurements could provide crazy 3d models!
So i started studying and applying it.
Using cameras held in my hands, with my feet on ground.
And using UAVs, carrying cameras everywhere for shooting inaccessible areas.
I am a UAV pilot and i use drones in my work.
Photogrammetry and laser scanning are cool!
But don’t forget the bases of measurement.
If you want to build a “solid” 3D dense point cloud from a structure from motion process, you need to know how to measure properly.
So i work with satellite receivers, edit GNSS data and use total station (TPS) in the field to support the process and verify the results.
So, this is my story so far.
Currently that’s what i’m doing during the most part of my time.
My job allows me to spend a lot of time outside.
And that’s cool!
I hope to update this page with new stories and experiences in the future.
